The team from the eastern portion of Java was eager to get rid of the Thais after BTS lost to the same Hongyen side earlier in the group stage.
Given that we also won the Indonesian league championship, it is astonishing that Indonesia has won this match for the first time. We were confident since we had goals in mind from the beginning. Hector Souto, the head coach of BTS, remarked, "We are champions; thus, we should be pleased that we won a difficult game."
The previous six games had all been won by Thai teams, including Bangkok BTS in 2018, Chonburi Bluewave in 2019, and Port FC in 2015, 2016, and 2018. (2019 and 2021).
This time, Edison Machado Coelho served as the main source of inspiration for BTS. In an exciting match, BTS just upset the reigning champion Black Steel Manokwari to win the Indonesian League title.
Both Katawut Phoopan, the captain of BTS, and Wendel Mendes of Hongyen had early scoring chances. But in the 11th minute, Samuel Eko Tampubolon swerved a shot past Jaroenpong Prasansat to give BTS the lead.
Four minutes later, Coelho doubled BTS's advantage after avoiding two opponents and beating Jaroenpong to the ball.
In the 18th minute, Ampol Sriragaew's free kick gave Hongyen the opportunity to restore momentum and escalate the ante.
Keattisak Songkhrao's equalizing goal two minutes into the second half caused Hongyen's supporters to rise to their feet.
BTS, though, persisted. Andri Kustiawan regained the lead by making use of a dropped ball midway through the game. Six minutes later, Coelho maintained control to shoot the ball into Hongyen's net, bringing the score to 4-2.
As time ran out in the thrilling championship match, tempers flared when Hongyen's Katawut was sent off and BTS received two yellow cards, one of which was given to head coach Souto.
